India Approves National Sports Policy 2025 to Boost Athletic Ecosystem

New Delhi - The Indian government has approved the National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025, marking a significant step toward enhancing the country's sports infrastructure and participation. The policy, cleared by the Union Cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeks to replace the existing framework from 2001 and foster greater synergy between society and sports.

Key objectives of the NSP 2025 include promoting sports as a tool for national development, increasing citizen engagement, and positioning India as a global sports powerhouse. It emphasizes building a robust ecosystem that integrates sports with education and career opportunities, aligning with broader national goals such as the National Education Policy 2020.

The policy also highlights engaging the Indian diaspora through sports, which could open pathways for overseas Indian-origin athletes to represent national teams. This aspect has drawn attention in football circles, where it may facilitate participation from players in international leagues.

In parallel developments, the passage of the National Sports Governance Act 2025 aims to ensure transparency, accountability, and athlete-centric governance in sports bodies. The act introduces measures for dispute resolution, gender equality, and stronger representation for athletes and para-athletes.

Financial support for sports has seen a substantial rise, with the budget reaching ₹3,794 crore, reflecting a 131% increase since the 2014-15 fiscal year. Initiatives like the Khelo Bharat Niti and AI-powered talent identification programs such as KIRTI are set to drive grassroots development and global competitiveness.

These reforms come amid a surge in India's sporting achievements, including recent successes in para-archery, squash, and women's football. The policy's rollout coincides with celebrations of National Sports Day on August 29, honoring hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.

  • Budget Allocation: ₹3,794 crore for sports development.
  • Key Reforms: Athlete-first governance, diaspora engagement, and integration with education.
  • Upcoming Events: India to host major tournaments including the Women's Kabaddi World Cup 2025 and Men's Hockey Asia Cup 2025.

Officials state that the NSP 2025 will pave the way for increased participation and podium finishes on the international stage, building on India's recent Paralympic performances and other milestones.
