India Approves National Sports Policy 2025 to Boost Sporting Ecosystem
India's Union Cabinet has approved the National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025, marking a significant step toward enhancing the country's sports infrastructure and promoting greater participation at all levels. The policy, which replaces the earlier framework from 2001, aims to foster synergy between society and sports while emphasizing transparency, accountability, and athlete-centered initiatives.Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the NSP 2025 outlines key objectives including the development of safe sports environments and the integration of sports into education and community programs. Officials highlighted that the policy seeks to empower citizens through sports, with a focus on building a robust ecosystem that supports emerging talent and international competitiveness.A notable aspect of the policy is its emphasis on engaging the Indian diaspora, potentially opening avenues for overseas Indian-origin athletes to contribute to national teams. This could have implications for sports like football, where top players in international leagues might represent India. The approval comes alongside the National Sports Governance Bill 2025, which establishes a legal framework for sports administration in India. According to Kunal, Joint Secretary in the Sports Ministry, the bill introduces measures for transparency and athlete welfare, describing it as a "landmark" development for Indian sports. The policy also aligns with upcoming major events in India, such as the Women's Kabaddi World Cup and Khelo India Youth Games in Bihar, as well as international championships in Ahmedabad, including the 2025 Asian Swimming Championship and 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championship.Sports authorities anticipate that these reforms will elevate India's performance on the global stage, building on recent achievements in disciplines like squash, para archery, and women's football.
